VALTHERMO®

The economic and sustainable alternative to Cu and CuAg overhead contact systems

The advantages of VALTHERMO® over copper and copper-silver contact wires is clear: Higher wear resistance, higher thermal resistance and lower creep strain, while achieving the same high level of conductivity. NKT’s new contact wire material is also a sustainable product: Through production and operation, over 5,500 tons of CO2 can be saved per 100 km of double-track line. Conserve resources through fewer contact wire changes and reduced wear overall.

Rethink, think sustainably and reduce costs over the life cycle for commissioning and maintaining contact wires and conductors. Put your trust in VALTHERMO®.

Find out more about VALTHERMO®

10 Reasons why substituting copper contact wires with VALTHERMO® is beneficial for you:

  1. Significant cost savings on operation and maintenance
  2. Long service life and fewer contact wire changes guarantee a higher track availability
  3. Reduced environmental impact
  4. Resource and budget savings
  5. Lower costs for readjustments due to lower creep strain
  6. Consistently convenient installation (‘Bending quality’)
  7. Compatible with Cu-ETP and CuAg0.1 contact wires, as well as with clamps and other accessories.
  8. Complies with EN 50149
  9. Suits applications with alternating current or direct current
  10. Suits local and mainline routes, as well as in trolley buses

Tried and tested in the field: VALTHERMO® is proven to pay off

NKT has been demonstrating the benefits of VALTHERMO® for a long time. In close cooperation with TU Dresden, NKT’s innovative contact wire and its life cycle costs were tested in operation and compared to conventional overhead lines. The results: VALTHERMO®’s service life is more than double that of conventional lines, and also saves on readjustments after initial installation of the contact wires.

In line with this economic efficiency, TU Dresden is currently in a further study to highlight the low environmental impact of VALTHERMO®. The most important evaluation parameter is the difference in CO2 emissions when using the new NKT contact wire in comparison to conventional contact wire materials.

Our success stories

Up to 330 km/h: High-speed rail from Berlin to Munich
The rail connection between Berlin and Munich is one of our most recent success stories. In the period from 2013 to 2016, NKT developed and produced contact wires, messenger wires and dropper wires for high-frequency ICE lines. The results: Top speeds of up to 330 km/h, and travel time reduced from over 6 hours to less than 4 hours.

Gotthard Tunnel: The Longest Rail Tunnel in the World
57 km long and 17 years of construction: The Gotthard tunnel entered service on schedule on December 11, 2016. For this unique project, NKT delivered 2,800 km of cables for power and data transmission, amongst other things. By crossing through the Swiss Alps, the journey time from Zurich to Milan has reduced to only two hours and 40 minutes.

Paris–Strasbourg: There’s nothing faster.
The line between Paris and Strasbourg boasts the speed record for conventional rail systems. During the record-breaking run, the train reached an impressive speed of 574.8 km/h. Even during normal operation, the French TGV and the German ICE routes still run at a whopping 320 km/h. For these routes, NKT supplied 13,850 km of copper-tin wire (CuSn).

Spain: Various Highspeed Projects
NKT is also a reliable supplier for multiple high-speed rail connections in Spain. So far, NKT has supplied 4,000 tons of CuMg contact wires and stranded wires to the Iberian Peninsula, for routes such as Madrid–Barcelona, Orense–Santiago de Compostela, and Venta de Baños–Burgos. Spain operates one of the largest high-speed rail networks in Europe.

Austria: Strong Partner to the ÖBB
NKT has been a supplier to ÖBB Infrastruktur AG since 2011. Significant projects include the Arlberg, Lainz and Wienerwald tunnels. In addition, all current Furrer+Frey rails are equipped with NKT’s special wires. With VALTHERMO®,the new product from NKT, ÖBB is going to reduce its operating costs and make a major contribution to greater sustainability in rail transport.

MEAT: The Paradigm Shift in Contracting

Electrical energy must be sustainable and economically useful. Not only does this require innovative and creative products, it also means that procurement processes need to be reconsidered. At present, commonly used procurement practices put central importance on the initial costs. However, follow-up costs like maintenance, wear and tear, and energy consumption are too rarely or insufficiently assessed during procurement decision making.

Therefore, together with UNIFE (Association of the European Rail Industry), NKT supports the criteria of MEAT (Most Economically Advantageous Tender). Following this principle, so-called life cycle costs should also be sufficiently incorporated when making decisions to award a contract, together with the actual price of the product and other cost components that are outside the procurement itself.

More about MEAT

An overall cost analysis may justify higher cost prices by creating lower operating and environmental costs in the medium term. Due to our innovative products, suppliers implementing and using suitable rationalization effects can be given preference over providers with a lower base cost price.
